Now we need rest and recovery. We want to express our aloha for the love and prayers going out from so many people. It is overwhelming and humbling that so many people have circled the world with a lei of prayer and thoughts of aloha. We talk of the possibilities for aloha to blanket the world with love. It’s message has spread through the hospital or at least the 6th floor.” She also mentioned about the care that Cyril is receiving as she says “the staff at Queen’s is amazing and as Cyril signed this morning, “Thank you!” Cyril wrote that on a piece of paper that he asked for and shared it with his nurses. Cyril Pahinui Responds To…Hawaiian Music After Surgery!

Legendary Hawaii Recording Artist and Slack-Key Master, Cyril Pahinui, is recovering after risky surgery yesterday at the Queenʻs Medical Center. He remains in critical condition, but is stable, conscious, and making good progress. When Cyril first entered the hospital last week, Hawaiian music was played on the radio or streamed into his room. Since word of his hospitalization, many musicians have been coming to the hospital to play music for Cyril.  Cyril has responded since the surgery by tapping his fingers and attempting to sing along. His wife Chelle says, “Cyril has been tearing up and tapping his hands.” In another text from the hospital she wrote, “We have a miracle. He started clapping, crying, and ‘arranging pointing’ and telling Sean Robbins (Cyrilʻs Slack Key protégé) to ‘take one!’ The staff is amazed.” Cyrilʻs wife, Chelle Pahinui, says that he is receiving high levels of oxygen to inflate his lung. His right lung collapsed several days ago and attempts to alleviate the medical situation were futile; last resort was the surgery as doctors were trying to offset CO2 saturation that could result in a permanent coma […]

Update: Cyril Pahinui Recovering From Lung Surgery

The following has been released by the Pahinui family on the improving condition of Master Slack Key guitarist and Hawaii Recording Artist Cyril Pahinui: “Cyril Pahinui continues to recover tonight after surgery earlier this afternoon at the Queenʻs Medical Center.  He remains in critical condition, surrounded by family and friends. Cyril is not only a member of the famed Pahinui family, he is also a veteran of the Vietnam War serving on the front lines when he was exposed to chemicals that have impacted his lungs and heart for many years, according to his wife Chell.  Despite these conditions, Cyril has entertained playing Hawaiian music and sharing the artistry of Slack-Key for years. His condition has worsened recently to where Cyril’s right lung has collapsed and the lining filled with fluids. Cyril was admitted to the hospital and after what his family calls, “pretty aggressive risky medical procedures,” to hopefully resolve the condition. After consultation with his doctors he underwent lung surgery earlier today.  He entered surgery at 11:00 a.m. this morning and the surgery lasted about two and a half hours.  Cyril was back recovering in ICU at about 3:00 p.m. Close friends of Cyril Pahinui have helped out by teaching his slack-key guitar classes and visiting him at the hospital.  Many kind words and get-well messages have been received by phone, email and social media.  The Pahinui family are grateful for the outpouring of aloha and Cyril was reading many of them before the surgery earlier today.
